Our neighbors abandoned a beautiful cat we found in our flowerbed almost gone about two years ago, and we have brought her back to health and happiness over time and named her Goober. I have a ferral cat that I attend to. This product has literally saved her life in the cold. After a few days of avoiding the mat, she learned that it emitted warmth. She has remained glued to it. I have used a heavy-duty extension cord with no problem. You will have to determine how to run the cord unobtrusively. Also, I run the cord under a door that I don't use much. Otherwise, you will damage the bottom of your door. An outdoor outlet would be better. You want to obtain an extra cover, so that you can wash the original from time to time.
